Well, summer is finally here, and it’s almost time for the ADHD Summer Book Club featuring Dr. Tamara Rosier’s book You, Me and Our ADHD Family. I’ve been blown away by the useful strategies and tips, but also by Dr. Rosier’s authenticity in telling her story and sharing her vulnerability in this engaging and powerful book.

I’ve been studying psychology, coaching and ADHD for a number of years, and I found that the way Dr. Rosier explains the ADHD nervous system’s relationship to emotions (and emotional regulation) builds on evidence-based best practices while her unique voice helps complex concepts become easy to understand. And, with understanding, it becomes possible to react intentionally to life’s stressors rather than careening around from big emotion to big emotion until we fall from exhaustion.
I particularly liked how Dr. Rosier leveraged Dr. Daniel Seigel’s ‘window of tolerance’ concept, using this framework that describes the Goldilocks zone of emotions, and then to anchoring techniques to widen our window and to recognize where we are experiencing emotions in relation to our window of tolerance. I have started to use this concept with my coaching clients, in my parenting and to help me be more intentional with how I am showing up with the folks who are important in my life and I am really finding it to be powerful and effective.
It’s important to note that understanding your window of tolerance, widening the window, and being aware of your emotional state isn’t about not feeling emotions. Instead, it’s about being aware of what you are feeling and knowing how to self-support to make it easier to stay inside your emotional Goldilocks zone, regardless of the stressors life throws your way.
I’m excited to do a deep dive into this and other fascinating topics and tools as part of the Book Club. It’s not to late to sign up – we’d love you to join us and share your story. Register on Eventbrite, Facebook or Meetup.
